By Samantha Roseff - Palm Beach Central and Wellington face off in hopes of winning the Wellington Cup. PBC won last year 41-14 and are expected to win again. They have gone 7-1 compared to Wellingtons’ 2-6 season. But can Central bounce back from the tough loss from last week's game against Gardens?
Comparing team statistics, PBC has the upper hand. The Broncos have an average of 38.4 score, which is almost triple of Wellington's average, of 14. Broncos also have two times the amount of rushing yards per game with 105 compared to Wellington's 52.4. The only stat where Wellington is in the lead is for sacks, but not by much, 2.0 to the Broncos 1.9.
Even when comparing the quarterbacks, the Broncos still have the advantage. Both teams' quarterbacks (PBC - Caleb Butler #15, WHS - Jonathan Paul #1) are sophomores, 6 '1, similar weight, and even push the same weight. Both can bench 185 lbs and have only a 30 Ibs difference when squatting. But Butler is ranked 59 in the state, compared to Paul's 436 rank. Butler also has the higher average for passing yards per game with 212.4 compared to Paul's 124.4. He is even higher in total yards too, with a 216.6 while Jonathan only has 131 average.
But when comparing other players, both have very close averages. Palm Beach Centrals very own Leon Williams #10 has an average of 49.0 rushing yards per game while Wellingtons, Tyree Pearson #10, has a slightly lower average with a 47.4. Julian Riaboukha #25 WHS has the higher average for tackles compared to PBCs Cameron Dwyer #23. Riaboukha has a 6.3 while Dwyer only has a 5.2.
When comparing the teams, it is apparent that Central has the higher averages. But when comparing each player to one another, they are either very similar or almost double the average. This game will truly come down to which team can work best with each other. Looking on paper, PBC should keep the Welly Cup for another year
